Following up without spam
Most deals close on follow-up 2 or 3, not message 1. But most people either (a) never follow up at all, or (b) follow up so aggressively they get blocked. The middle path is a specific 3-touch cadence with variation.
Timing: 3 days, 7 days, 14 days. Send message 1, then wait 3 days. No reply? Send a short follow-up. Wait 7 days from that. No reply? One last gentle touch at the 14-day mark. After that, stop. That's the whole cadence — three follow-ups across three weeks, then move on.
Variation. Don't send "Just bumping this up" three times. Each follow-up should add NEW value or a NEW angle. Follow-up 1: a quick tip or resource related to their situation ("Btw, found this checklist for first-time movers, thought of your post"). Follow-up 2: a different question ("Curious — did you end up finding someone for the kitchen?"). Follow-up 3: the soft close (see below).
When to stop. Stop immediately if they reply with "not interested", "not now", or any version of no. Stop if they don't open after 14 days across 3 touches — that's a clear signal. Stop if you feel weird sending the next one — your gut is usually right. Persistence past 3 follow-ups isn't hustle, it's harassment.
The soft close pattern. The last follow-up should be a graceful exit, not a guilt trip. Use this template: "Hey [name] — totally understand if the timing isn't right. I'll stop bugging you 🙂 If you ever want a free [thing], my door's open. Best of luck with [their specific situation]." This message has a ~10% reply rate by itself — because it removes pressure and signals you're a normal person, not a closer.
